Wingspan 1.90 m
Flight time 20+ km Range
Max speed 120 km/h
Engineering record

Thunderbird was our 2022 IMechE UAS Challenge aircraft. Its box-wing layout was developed to reduce wingtip losses and improve aerodynamic efficiency within a compact airframe.

Key Features

  • Box-wing configuration: The layout achieved a lift-to-drag ratio above 10.
  • Internal payload bay: Four litres of space kept the package inside the airframe.
  • 3D-printed frame: The team could manufacture and replace airframe sections in-house.

Competition

Thunderbird won the Media & Engagement Award for the team’s outreach with schools and local students. A technical issue kept the aircraft from flying in time, and the team finished 17th out of 32.

Mission Profile

The mission called for autonomous delivery of medicine, essential supplies, or communications equipment. Thunderbird was built to complete that mission without a runway or manual control during take-off and landing.
