VAU2

Tilt rotors in a modular 3D-printed frame

Weight < 7 kg
Wingspan 1.90 m
Flight time High Efficiency
Max speed 110 km/h
Engineering record

VAU2 was our 2020 UAS Challenge entry. Its tilting rotors and modular 3D-printed frame earned first place in the Innovation Award and eighth place in Design.

Key Features

  • Tilt-rotor mechanism: The motors rotate between vertical lift and forward flight.
  • Combined stabilisers: The vertical stabilisers also serve as landing gear, saving parts and weight.
  • Modular frame: 3D-printed sections make assembly and part replacement more straightforward.

Mission Profile

VAU2 was designed to carry emergency aid without depending on a runway. The project gave the team practical experience with tilt mechanisms, modular airframes, and the difficult transition between hover and forward flight.
